Aluminium Electrical Enclosure

Aluminium die cast enclosures offer a combination of properties unavailable in plastic housings: inherent electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, higher impact strength, dimensional stability across temperature, and the ability to dissipate heat from enclosed electronics. For industrial, outdoor, and hazardous-area applications, these properties make aluminium die casting the preferred manufacturing route.

SAPL produces aluminium enclosures by HPDC (smaller enclosures, higher volume) and GDC (larger enclosures where wall thickness and soundness are priorities). Sealing faces are machined flat (≤ 0.05 mm flatness over the sealing perimeter) to achieve consistent IP54 or IP65 sealing when used with standard elastomeric gaskets. Cable entry boss holes are drilled and tapped for standard cable gland threads (PG, M-metric, or NPT).

Surface treatment is applied to all external surfaces. Standard options include powder coat (polyester or epoxy) for general industrial environments and RAL colour customer-specified finishes. Where the enclosure must meet ATEX or marine requirements, additional surface treatment specifications can be discussed at the programme review.

Critical quality requirements

These are the characteristics SAPL controls and measures on every production batch for this component — and how they are maintained in the process.

Sealing face flatness for IP rating

IP rating is achieved only if the sealing face is flat enough for the gasket to compress uniformly. SAPL machines all sealing faces to ≤ 0.05 mm flatness over the perimeter and verifies flatness with a CMM on first-article and a surface plate check in production.

Cable entry boss integrity

Tapped boss holes for cable glands must have full thread engagement depth and sufficient wall thickness to resist torque without cracking. Thread depth and boss wall thickness are verified at the die approval stage.

Coating adhesion and corrosion resistance

Enclosures in industrial or outdoor environments require coating systems with proven adhesion and corrosion resistance. SAPL applies powder coat over phosphate pre-treatment and verifies adhesion by cross-hatch test (ISO 2409, Grade 0) and corrosion resistance by salt-spray test (ASTM B117, 500 hours minimum for outdoor duty).

Common questions

Questions from procurement teams and design engineers about this component.

Ask a technical question →

What IP rating can SAPL's aluminium enclosures achieve?

With machined sealing faces and a standard elastomeric O-ring or flat gasket, SAPL's enclosures can achieve IP54 (dust protected, splash resistant) or IP65 (dust tight, jet-water resistant). The IP rating depends on the gasket design and installation, which SAPL will review as part of the DFM and sealing face specification.

Does aluminium provide EMI shielding?

Yes. Aluminium provides inherent electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of approximately 60–80 dB at frequencies from 100 MHz to 10 GHz, which is sufficient for most industrial EMC requirements. The shielding effectiveness depends on enclosure geometry (aperture size and placement) as well as the material, and SAPL can review the aperture design as part of the engineering support service.

Can SAPL produce ATEX-rated enclosures?

SAPL produces the aluminium casting and machined enclosure body. ATEX certification is a product-level approval that covers the complete assembly, gasket, fasteners, and installation. SAPL will provide the casting and machining documentation required for the customer's ATEX certification submission, and can discuss the specific requirements at the engineering review stage.
