Mechanical Pump Housing — aluminium die casting component

Mechanical Pump Housing

Mechanical pump housings are among the most demanding aluminium die castings in automotive applications. They must contain fluid under pressure without leakage — which demands a casting free of through-porosity and cold shuts — while simultaneously providing accurately machined port bores, seal groove geometry, and flange faces that mate with pump body, motor, and piping connections.

SAPL produces pump housings on 350T and 450T HPDC machines using ADC12 or A380 alloy depending on the pressure and strength requirement. Injection parameters are validated through a process FMEA and controlled to a narrow process window. Pressure-tight integrity is verified by hydrostatic leak testing on first-article and on a statistical sample basis during production.

Post-cast machining covers all fluid-path surfaces: port bores (H7), seal grooves (to customer drawing), flange mating faces (flatness ≤ 0.05 mm over the sealing diameter), and mounting hole patterns. SAPL provides a full dimensional report and material certificate with each new programme.

Critical quality requirements

These are the characteristics SAPL controls and measures on every production batch for this component — and how they are maintained in the process.

Porosity and leak integrity

Pump housings must be free of through-porosity that could form a leak path under operating pressure. SAPL validates the casting process using X-ray inspection on first-article samples, and monitors production with hydrostatic leak testing on a statistical basis.

Flange face flatness

Sealing faces must be flat to within 0.05 mm over the seal diameter to prevent fluid leakage at flange joints. SAPL mills sealing faces in a single VMC setup referenced from the port bore datum to ensure flatness and perpendicularity.

Thread integrity at port connections

Pipe thread connections (BSP, NPT, or metric) must be fully formed with correct pitch, profile, and depth. SAPL uses precision taps and go/no-go thread gauges on 100% of port threads in production.

Common questions

Questions from procurement teams and design engineers about this component.

Ask a technical question →

Does SAPL perform leak testing on pump housings?

Yes. Hydrostatic leak testing is performed on first-article samples at 1.5× the specified working pressure, with the test duration and acceptance criterion defined in the customer quality plan. Statistical sampling in production can be discussed at the programme approval stage.

Which alloy is better for automotive pump housings — ADC12 or A380?

ADC12 is suitable for most pump housing applications — it provides good pressure tightness and is well-characterised for HPDC. A380 offers approximately 10% higher tensile strength and improved fatigue resistance, which may be preferred for higher-pressure or higher-temperature applications. SAPL can supply either alloy and will discuss the trade-offs as part of the DFM review.

Can SAPL supply pump housings with seal groove machining?

Yes. Seal grooves — O-ring, lip seal, or face seal — are machined as part of SAPL's standard post-cast CNC sequence. Groove dimensions are machined to the customer drawing, including width, depth, and corner radius, and are inspected with a profile gauge.
