Tractor Cover

Tractor covers and access panels are structural enclosure components that must withstand mechanical shock, vibration, and outdoor exposure across a wide temperature range. Wall sections are typically thicker than consumer castings — favouring gravity die casting where soundness and mechanical integrity are priorities — though HPDC is used for thinner-section covers where volume and cycle time drive the process choice.

SAPL produces tractor covers using LM24 (GDC) and ADC12 (HPDC) depending on the programme specification. For GDC, dies are preheated to 200–250°C before pouring to ensure complete fill and consistent microstructure. For HPDC, injection parameters are set conservatively to prioritise soundness over short cycle time.

Surface treatment for agricultural covers typically involves a heavy-duty powder coat over zinc phosphate pre-treatment. The phosphate conversion layer provides baseline corrosion protection, and the topcoat provides scratch and UV resistance for outdoor environments. SAPL applies and inspects the coating in-house.

Critical quality requirements

These are the characteristics SAPL controls and measures on every production batch for this component — and how they are maintained in the process.

Dimensional stability under temperature

Agricultural equipment operates from sub-zero storage temperatures to high underbonnet temperatures. Covers must not distort across this range. LM24 is selected for its dimensional stability, and GDC process parameters are validated to minimise residual stress.

Coating corrosion resistance

Outdoor agricultural components face mud, water, fertiliser residue, and UV exposure. SAPL applies a zinc phosphate conversion layer followed by a heavy-duty outdoor powder coat and verifies performance by salt-spray testing per ASTM B117.

Fastener boss integrity

Mounting bosses on tractor covers carry assembly torques and field service loads. Boss wall thickness and draft angle are validated at the die approval stage, and thread engagement length is specified to prevent strip-out.

Common questions

Questions from procurement teams and design engineers about this component.

Ask a technical question →

Does SAPL use GDC or HPDC for tractor covers?

It depends on the wall thickness and volume requirement. GDC is preferred for thicker-section covers (wall ≥ 5 mm) where internal soundness and mechanical strength are the primary requirements. HPDC is used for thinner-section covers where cycle time and volume economics are more important.

What corrosion protection does SAPL apply to tractor covers?

The standard system for outdoor agricultural use is zinc phosphate conversion coating followed by a heavy-duty polyester powder coat at 60–80 µm film thickness. Salt-spray performance to ASTM B117 is verified on first-article samples.

Can SAPL supply tractor covers with tapped mounting holes?

Yes. All mounting holes are drilled and tapped to the customer drawing as part of the machining sequence. SAPL uses precision machine taps with go/no-go gauging on 100% of tapped holes.
