Retainer
Block.
Die cast aluminium retainer blocks for HVAC and fan assemblies — fastening and locating components with precise slot and hole geometry, supplied machined and ready for assembly.

Product Overview
Retainer Block
Retainer blocks are structural and locating components used in HVAC fan frames, motor mounting assemblies, and air handling units. They carry fastening loads and must provide consistent clamping force across a production batch — which requires dimensional stability in slot width, hole diameter, and overall block geometry.
SAPL produces retainer blocks on 180T HPDC machines. The compact geometry and relatively thin walls are well-suited to HPDC, providing consistent dimensions and fast cycle times. Fastener holes are drilled and reamed in the machining sequence; slots and clearance features are typically cast in. Where tighter slot tolerances are required, SAPL mills slot faces as part of the CNC sequence.
Retainer blocks are supplied either as-machined or with a protective coating depending on the operating environment. Indoor HVAC applications typically receive a zinc phosphate treatment; outdoor and industrial applications receive full powder coat.
Quality
Critical quality requirements
These are the characteristics SAPL controls and measures on every production batch for this component — and how they are maintained in the process.
Hole position accuracy
Fastener holes must be positioned to ±0.2 mm to mate with the corresponding fan frame or motor mount holes. SAPL drills all fastener holes from a common datum in a single CNC setup to maintain position accuracy across the batch.
Flatness of mating faces
Retainer blocks clamp against fan frame faces; waviness or twist in the mating surfaces reduces clamping force. Overall flatness of ≤ 0.2 mm is maintained through die design (balanced gating) and in-process plate-on-plate checking.
FAQ
Common questions
Questions from procurement teams and design engineers about this component.
Ask a technical question →Are retainer blocks supplied with surface treatment?
Yes. SAPL applies zinc phosphate for general indoor HVAC use or powder coat for outdoor and industrial environments. The appropriate treatment is specified as part of the programme documentation agreed at the RFQ stage.
Can SAPL hold tight slot tolerances on retainer blocks?
Cast slots are held to approximately ±0.3–0.5 mm as-cast. Where tighter tolerances (±0.15 mm or better) are required, SAPL mills the slot faces in the CNC machining sequence. This should be specified in the drawing or discussed at DFM review.
